Architecture Class

Lisa Yokana is a maker teacher.

She’s an art and architecture teacher at Scarsdale High School. For as long as I’ve known her, she’s been an amazing artist, design thinker, educator, and interdisciplinary innovator.

Lisa and I are both passionate about students doing real work in schools. While colleagues at a previous school, I continually observed Lisa designing projects with her students that had them doing real work in and out of the classroom.

Even her high school art history students did real work – they served as museum docents for our middle school students during their class trips to NYC museums. It was an incredible way to apply what they were learning through teaching their peers.

Lisa’s currently working on designing flexible learning spaces through Scarsdale’s Innovation Center, a space that tackles questions like the following:

  1. What will schools look like in the future?
  2. What kinds of spaces do we need to support instruction and collaborative work in 5-10 years?
  3. How will technology transform curriculum, instruction, and assessment?

and whose mission for students is to support students in

  1. think[ing] critically and creatively in order to solve complex, non-standard problems
  2. understand[ing] their role in an interdependent world
  3. use evolving technologies for research, communication, and innovation

The Center for Innovation (CFI) is focused on re-imagining education for all students. It is empowered to develop, nurture, and provide feedback for innovative ideas relating to teaching and learning. The Center will link educators throughout the community so they can develop, test and implement, and evaluate innovative ideas and methodologies in order to imagine a future that has yet to be invented.

Lisa and I believe there’s a missing link between the growing popularity and acceptance of making outside of schools versus within them, and that this missing link is teachers’ inexperience teaching making. To address that gap, we co-authored an article, 4 Steps to Becoming a Maker Teacher.
